About the St Leonards School |
From Vision and Realisation, published by the Education Department of Victoria in 1973:
First proposed by Robert Smiley in 1865, St Leonards officially opened on 12th of October 1874 as a single-room, weatherboard building, 30 ft x 18 ft, situated on a ½ acre site of Allotment 1 of Block XII situated on the Queenscliff Road, township of St Leonards, Parish of Paywit in the County of Grant, donated by the Hon. George W Cole, MP. Head Teacher George Stephenson first enrolled 19 children representing Grades 1-8 on 9th of October 1865 in temporary accommodation on private property. This school was struck off the rolls of the Board of Education on 27th of September 1867 through the inability of the local Committee to raise sufficient money to erect a suitable building, but it carried on as a private school. In 1874 Head Teacher William R Sheppard opened the new State School with an average attendance of 23 pupils.
