In the late 1870s the vines of the Barrabool Hills were devastated by an outbreak of the Phylloxera vastatrix disease caused by a tiny insect known as the grape louse.  Diseased vines were uprooted and destroyed across the region and the Diseases in the Vine Act of 1877 was amended a number of times resulting in the proclamation of the Geelong Vine Disease District in January 1881.  The disease has spread further than first envisaged and by 1882 the Geelong district was no longer a vine growing region.  The 1882 lists were the tail-end of the compensation paid to growers in our district.
