• Convict: Petition and correspondence files, 1847, Ireland. HOW TO FIND:
Hi Rhonda - had to wait until I got back home and could find the documents and references for my Irish Convict in the 'Ireland-Australia transportation database'. In addition to the Transportation Register I ended up with 38 pages of correspondence / petition. The earlier petitions were PPC files initially [Prisoners' Petitions and Cases] and later called CRF [Convict Reference Files] - mine was in the latter. I remember initially having difficulty finding the extra files so I've tracked back my notes. Obviously not all convicts had these files but you really need to check as they're wonderful if they exist. So, go to the main database ... http://findingaids.nationalarchives.ie/index.php... <http://findingaids.nationalarchives.ie/index.php?category=18&subcategory=147&hc_location=ufi> Select SWITCH TO ADVANCED SEARCH then CREATE NEW SEARCH FILTER. Fill in the yellow box for Last name then choose contains or equals, the surname and click on ADD THIS FILTER. Then click on CREATE NEW SEARCH FILTER and do the same for First name. DON'T add too many filters - the ONLY other common data in the TWO separate records I needed was the year of trial so I ended up with JOHN MURRAY 1847 as my 3 filters, then clicked on SUBMIT QUERY. I got 3 hits and two were mine. One was the Document ref1: TR6, p 145 and the second was Document ref1: CRF 1847 M 11 and that was the magic 38 page one. Found in the films for CRF Files, alphabetical and numerical, so should have been in the Ms then file 11 - was actually in miscellaneous under M11 but worth it's weight in gold. So the key document didn't come under the main record but a second record for the same per. Try doing the search for John MURRAY tried in 1847 and you'll see what I mean about the different details recorded in the database! Sorry for being so long-winded but it's definitely persevering! Have fun

• Convict: Probationary, 1849, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Probationary Convicts in NSW - The colony of NSW would take prisoners of the crown as probationary convicts only if they had already served part of their sentence and had been found to be worthy of reclamation. These probationers on arrival walked off the ships with a parole in their hand. This parole was in the form of a ticket-of-leave and in some rare cases a conditional pardon.

• Convict: Certificate of Freedom. Shows birth year as 1822

• Occupation: Cabinet Maker & Publican.

• Occupation: publican at the Harp of Erin Hotel: Armidale, New South Wales, Australia. The Harp of Erin Hotel became the Wicklow Hotel aka Pink Pub. • Burial, 13 Sep 1877, Armidale Cemetery, New South Wales, Australia. No records showing grave site etc., but his wife had a headstone in what appeared to be a family plot - no other headstones or names appear in this plot in the burial records - John MURRAY and Bernard NAUGHTEN possibly both buried here.
