I think some of my confusion may be because early maps indicate that the Parish of Fordington used to surround Dorchester whereas the small village / hamlet [?] of Fordington is to the east of Dorchester. Then I have references to West Fordington which appears to be north west of Dorchester as there are corresponding references to Millers Close which is definitely north west of Dorchester.
At various times I have references to the family in the Parish of All Saints as well as the Parish of the Holy Trinity. And similar to Graham, I have them in the Grove Buildings.
From what I've been able to deduce from the Dorchester Conservation Area Appraisal report(s), the Grove Buildings may have been demolished in the 1970s, but it's not overly clear if this was the same "Grove Buildings" or something different. It's also nigh on impossible to work out the geography with references to "The Grove" [which] "runs alongside the boundary wall of Colliton Park [I've found that location] to Top o' Town" [and none of the maps show "Top o' Town"]
Hello Susie
Fordington virtually surrounded Dorchester but almost all the residents lived in a smallish area on the east side of Dorchester. The remainder was usually known as "Fordington Fields" but was all part of the parish of Fordington. By the way Fordington was far from a hamlet, having a large population which had to endure severe overcrowding in very poor conditions. Fordington was always the "poor relation" to Dorchester.
The area known as The Grove was built (?mid 1800's?) to the west side of Dorchester adjacent to Colliton Park (now the site of County Hall). It was definitely in Fordington and that part of Fordington logically became known as West Fordington. There was a school there and (I think) a church. Last I knew the school was now an arts and craft centre but there was only one other "old" building in the area -either a former farm house or maybe the vicarage. Grove buildings were demolished (?about 1970?) to make way for flats.
Dorchester itself was divided into three parishes - St Peters, Holy Trinity and All Saints. In view of their close proximity to Fordington (St Georges) there was always a lot of "interchange" between all four.
"Top o' Town" is the area around the intersection of the Bridport Road/High Street with The Grove/Albert Road (literally at the top end of the High West Street).
Hope this helps.

Hi Susie,
I was going to reply to your query, then found that Ray had beaten me to it with his fairly comprehensive explanation. Essentially the former village of Fordington (where I live) is a distinct area, but the parish extends around the outskirts of Dorchester, because there is no suitable catchment area to the north and east.
If you want any pictures of specific locations let me know (off-list, please!) and I will get them for you.
I do think it's worth adding that there is an excellent small, free program called Parloc (Parish Locator) which you can download. Go to <http://www.parloc.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/intro.html> and follow the links. This will show you not only the lcation of a specific parish, but if you ask it to it will also list others within a certain distance. This can be quite useful for locating parish records when they don't show up where you expect them.
Incidentally, strictly speaking your query was more of a Dorset-Life topic, since it was not purely genealogical, but we try not to be too tyrannical in Dorset!
Regards,
Davy Cannon,

Hello Davy and Ray,
Thank you both for your replies - it has helped understand why some of my references appear to be north west of where Fordington is shown on maps. From reading different articles it appears to date back to Fordington Manor which covered all that area.
I have Parish Locator - unfortunately it shows all the Dorchester parishes north west of Fordington so doesn't really cater for this odd one!
Thank you both again - I'll post other questions on Dorset-life for this family.
